Camping Gear: Purchasing the Right Camping Toilet for You
One of the things which puts a lot of people off the idea of camping in the outdoors is the concern over toilets, especially the availability of them, as well as their cleanliness. Only some camping grounds actually provide these facilities, and some rent a nearby farm field and install them there. The good news however is that you can now buy your own portable toilet, such as a Portaloo, and even composting toilets, so you can take your own facilities with you.
Some people don\'t like the idea of composting toilets, considering them to be unsanitary outhouse toilets. This is not however an accurate description, because they are a long way from being just a pit in the ground. They vary in design, some having a simple twin chamber design, others with more advanced design which boosts the natural composting process which creates fertilizer by recycling human wastes. There is also a common misconception that the composting toilet, as well as being unsanitary would also have an offensive, public toilet kind of smell. In fact the opposite is true, because these composting toilets have a suction air flow which acts like an exhaust fan and draws any odor away from the toilet.
A portable toilet can be a way for you to be able to enjoy the fun and adventure of camping whilst also having the comforts of home with you. An example of these portable toilets is the Luggable Loo, which is made of lightweight plastic, and has a removable bucket. The bucket has a five gallon capacity and can be used with a garbage bin liner, making it easy to clean. It has a toilet seat which snaps on top and makes it feel like your home toilet, and has a packet of enzyme deodorant which treats the waste chemically. It also has a comfortable handle which makes it easy to carry.
There are plenty of other models of portable toilet too, such as the OutBack Pack. This packs up very small, in fact it can fit in a backpack or under a car seat. It also has a built in and comfortable seat. and is safe to use on the water because of its re-sealable storage bag.
Another model is the Reliance Hassock which is a two bucket design, with an inner bucket which is lifted out for cleaning. There is a molded seat and you can store tissue in the top. The Phillips Environmental PETT is a more expensive model which packs up as small as a briefcase and weighs only seven pounds. You do however also need WAG bag kits with it, and these include a zip storage bag, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and waste bag. This toilet treats the waste chemically using a powder, which turns the waste into a gel and makes it safe to dispose of.
